Become a Breeding Season Bird Survey Volunteer

Tracy Aviary works with over 40 volunteers to monitor birds in 12 urban parks, recreation areas, and nature sites. The information we collect answers questions about how birds use their habitats and how we can protect these unique places for birds.

You don’t need to be an expert birder to volunteer for this project.

For this project, volunteers will begin weekly online and small group field trainings in March to learn how to identify local birds by sight and sound, and how to conduct a point count survey. Beginning in mid-April, and after completing an assessment to make sure they are comfortable with the methods, volunteers can sign up for early morning point count surveys at our study sites. These surveys are offered both on weekends and weekdays to ensure there will be opportunities that work for everyone’s schedule. Our volunteer team will continue conducting surveys during the entire breeding season, from mid-April to mid-July.

We will hold a zoom training, introduction to the project, and “pre-assessment” bird quiz in February each year.

Where do We go?

Breeding Season Survey volunteers visit 12 sites across Salt Lake County. These include mountains, wetlands, rivers, meadows and city parks. Volunteers get exclusive access to nature that is often closed off to the public.
