What is BirdNET?

A sound library of 984 of the most common species of North America and Europe, on your phone! By using this cell phone app, you can help a research project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Chemnitz University of Technology to understand how computers learn to recognize birds from the sounds they make.

How does BirdNET work?

BirdNet is an artificial neural network that will give you a guess as to what bird you are hearing, and prompt you to confirm. Both human, and computer, are learning in this process!

Where to try birdnet

Anywhere and everywhere! Within reason, of course (no trespassing). We all love finding the perfect birding area - and eBird’s Hot Spot Explorer helps us find these special places where you can see a diverse array of birds.

But what about the areas that aren’t as popular, or not as much of a hot spot? These areas are underrepresented on eBird and may leave some gaps in our data. If you want to help fill those gaps, take a look at the map below and make a trip to one of these not-so-hot spots.
