Preventing window collisions
Did you know that window collisions are one of the biggest threats to birds world-wide? Every year, an estimated one billion birds collide with windows in the United States alone. Birds do not perceive glass as a solid surface, but instead see them as an open space to fly through.
Bright city lights often disorient birds at night, particularly migratory species. The light draws the birds into urban centers, exposing them to much greater risk of fatal window collisions.
Contrary to popular belief, skyscrapers are not the primary culprit. 99% of bird-window collisions occur at windows that are 1 to 4 stories high. You can make an immediate difference for local bird populations by making your windows bird-friendly!
How do I make my windows bird-friendly?
There are several methods that mitigate the risk of bird-window collisions at your home!
Window Films
Window films are applied to the outside of your windows and allow birds to recognize the window as solid material.
There are several styles of film now, including clear, UV treated dots. Explore your window film options below!
Window films do not permanently alter your windows. The window decals are also washable! Be sure to check the installation instructions in your kit for the best ways to wash windows to maintain your specific film the longest.

Some extra tips!
If you are installing your own window film, make sure you watch the tutorial for your specific film! Different brands often have unique installation techniques.
The film MUST be applied on the outside of your windows in order to be effective.
Experts recommend spacing window film dots 2in by 2in to mitigate the most window strikes. Many brands provide sheets with the dots pre-spaced in 2in arrangements.

Acopian Curtains
Another option for minimizing bird strikes at your home is an acopian curtain. Acopian curtains are typically made of paracord or other sturdy strings and hang on the outside of your home in front of windows.
The curtains can dangle from the top of your window and blow in the breeze or be tied taut from top to bottom. Acopian curtains are cost effective, incredibly quick to install, and proven effective at mitigating collisions.
While you can order pre-made acopian curtains, they are also extremely easy and affordable to DIY and customize to your windows and style preferences.
